psychiatry at Oregon Health and Science University. A graduate of Georgetown University School of Medicine, Dr. Usher completed adult psychiatry training at the Harvard Longwood Psychiatry Residency Training Program, then fellowship in child psychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital. His practice, research and writing interests include psychodynamic psychotherapy with children and teenagers, work with the Washington County Early Assessment and Support Alliance program aimed at psychosocial intervention for adolescents suffering psychotic illness, and pediatrics consultation.

Description of upcoming meeting

In 1963, celebrated British pediatrician and psychoanalyst D.W. Winnicott offered that “a sign of health in the mind is the ability of one individual to enter imaginatively and accurately into the thoughts and feelings and hopes and fears of another person; to allow the other person to do the same to us.” Contemporary neuroscience and psychotherapy-researchers have discovered that “mental health” and relationship health may indeed hinge on this ability to reflect on one’s own mental state and that of others. In this talk Dr. Usher will explore the neural structures, including mirror neurons, which are key to this process, called mentalizing. He will also explore how attachment relates to mentalizing and how therapists might help their patients/clients enjoy a deeper, more reflective experience.
